Bald Eagle Tour at Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge

Check out birds—and probably bald eagles—in their natural habitat on this private winter walk through Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, February 4 with park ranger Marty McClevey.

February is the best month for viewing bald eagles at the park.

You will need to make your own way to the park (we will provide the exact address), and the tour will last from approximately 9 a.m.-noon. There are only 20 spots (one guest allowed per member, kids allowed) so RSVP today!

Questions? Christine Dell'Amore,rueparadis@gmail.com.

This event is now full.

2011 DCSWA Newsbrief Award for Short Science Journalism
— Apply Now! —

Did you or someone you know write or produce an exceptional print, online, audio, or video piece this year? If so, enter to win the 2011 DCSWA Newsbrief Award and $500!

If you are a current member of DCSWA, you can submit your own work or nominate that of any other member.
See further details below.

Purpose of the Award: To recognize outstanding short-form science journalism by members of the D.C. Science Writers Association (DCSWA).

Award: Entries will be judged by a committee of distinguished DCSWA members selected by the DCSWA board. The winning writer(s) will receive a prize of $500 and a commemorative plaque. Honorable mention certificates will be awarded at the judging panel's discretion.

Rules:

  1.
DCSWA members in good standing as of the deadline are eligible to win.

  2. An entry may be submitted either by the individual(s) responsible for it or by a nominator, who does not have to be a DCSWA member.
  3. Entries may be print, online, audio, video, or multimedia science stories (including, but not limited to, news, commentary, blog posts, and press releases) published or distributed between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2011. Entries must be submitted as originally published or broadcast.
  4. Entries should be brief. Though there are no strict length limits, please note that judges will strongly favor articles less than approximately 450 words, videos less than approximately 4:30 minutes, audio pieces less than approximately 3:30 minutes, and multimedia pieces of equivalent brevity.
  5. Entries must be submitted by email. In the email, include either hyperlinks to online entries or attachments in standard file formats (such as .doc, .mp3, and .pdf) of under 25 MB. If a login is required to access the entry, a username and password must be provided. Entries must be emailed to: newsbriefaward@gmail.com with the subject line "2011 DCSWA Science Newsbrief entry." You will receive an auto-reply confirmation of your submission.
  6. All entries must arrive no later than 11:59 p.m. EST February 1, 2012.

  7. Each entrant may be associated with up to three entries. A collaborative effort of multiple authors may be submitted, but at least one author must be eligible, and all authors' names must be included. Unrelated stories may not be submitted as a single entry, even if by the same author or published/broadcast consecutively.

  8. The work of sitting DCSWA board members or by members of the judging panel is not eligible for the 2011 DCSWA Science Newsbrief Award.

  9. DCSWA reserves the right to cancel the 2011 DCSWA Science Newsbrief Award if the quantity or quality of the collected entries are judged by the award panel to be insufficient to merit recognition. Judges also have the right to select up to two honorable mentions.
