Geology Tour of DC — September 18, 2010
DC’s geologic history has been just as tumultuous as its political one. In the past several hundred million years, the nation’s capital has been home to an ocean, a magma chamber, earthquakes and a river where dinosaurs swam. Join DCSWA on Saturday, September 18 when Callan Bentley, a geology professor at Northern Virginia Community College, leads us on a trip through Rock Creek Park to see the remnants of DC’s rocky past. We’ll end the day in true geologists’ fashion with a round of beers at Murphy’s Pub in Woodley Park.
The free walking tour will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Zoo Bridge near 1845 Harvard Street NW (near the intersection of Harvard and Adams Mill Road). The 3-hour walk covers some non-paved hiking trails, so please wear sturdy walking shoes and bring enough food/water to satisfy your needs. There will be one bathroom stop. Space is limited to 25, so each DCSWA member may bring only one guest. Once the event is full, you can e-mail president@dcswa.org to get on the waiting list.
